By: Latifa
This is a beautiful and touching memoir written by a girl in the period of the Taliban takeover of Kabul-Afghanistan... The whole experience is summarized by the title. The author is simply mentioned as 'Latifa', the girl whose identity is stolen by the Taliban, along with her face.... She is not a woman anymore, but only a veil and an object to be stored , with no intrinsic value or ability to learn, work or live. With women, the arts and pleasures of daily life are systematically attacked and replaced with a unilateral and poor take on life, and a desert-like dry and wasteland existence...
The book goes over important and descriptive stages in the modern history of Afganistan, and discusses the deep loss imposed on the people by the brutal extremist regime, which seems focused on killing away the last breath of life of a life-loving and proud people. Power games, false religion, and extreme oppression, are at play, all whole the world watches in silence and ugly apathy.
