Reality (the movie)

Reality TV, as an example of the 'unreality' that the 'society of spectacle' can make people sink in...

Lucciano is a 'realistic' man who lives a regular life in Napoli with his family, living from selling fish and 'some minor illegal activities'... the auditions for 'big brother' (reality tv show) comes to a Mall (??) near where he lives, and he is begged by his daughters to apply to the auditions, and this is where his life begins changing. The 'Big Brother' theme overflows into his life, and he starts believing that general people around him have been sent by the program to test him, and he becomes nice to poor people (whom he treated badly before), and begins to drift from reality, sells his fish-store, gets rid of his furniture and many of his belongings.

The movie raises a number of very important questions on work and labor, realism, positive thinking (review Marcuse's the one-dimensional man: http://nth-word.blogspot.com/2009/04/one-dimensional-man-by-herbert-marcuse.html) and its ability to 'steal ' people from their lives. It also raises the issue of truthfulness and falsehood in life, and man's ability to understand and contribute in his 'reality'. The great american dream can kidnap people from their life - yes , some people's lives are drastically pushed up by the consuming society's luck, but how many are those - and is that proof that the experiment (consumeristic-show-society) works ?
